Days 55 and 56- September 1 and 2, 2008

Days 55 and 56
September 1 and 2, 2008
Ocean Side RV Park, Haines AK

The good news is that Merrell is feeling GREAT. He started feeling better yesterday morning. No more fever and chills and as the day went on he felt progressively better. I personally think it was the toboggan Carolee and Chuck bought him to keep his head warm when he was chilling so bad. Dr. Merrell (we all know about his herbal and medical books, don't we??? LOL) said that you lose around 86 percent of your body heat out of the top of your head (and of course we all know what's under that ball cap that he wears all of the time), so they walked uptown and brought him back a camouflage one. It was a sight to behold. I wish I had taken a picture of him huddled up in the bed with all the covers piled on him and a camouflage toboggan on his head. Just picture that!! Teeheehee I just couldn't bring myself to do it because he was feeling sooooooo bad. Carolee also made him a pot of homemade chicken noodle soup and between those two things, he was feeling better by the next day.

When Carolee and Chuck walked to town they saw this beautiful Alaskan Mountain Ash tree covered with red berries. Carolee thought it would make a wonderful Christmas tree and I tend to agree that it would be beautiful to have in your yard.

Merrell and Chuck's Best Side

Merrell and Chuck are working on the motor home today. Just checking stuff out and making sure it's ready to travel back into the wilds of Canada. Our Motor Home is a diesel pusher, which means that the motor is in the back under our bed. To get to the motor, you have to take the mattress off the bed and raise a wooden door. I took a couple of pictures so I could prove that they were actually working. The above one was the best, but they turned around and looked at me so I thought I would show the other side too!! Working hard in Haines, Alaska

Later this afternoon we are going to walk uptown and then go out to see if the bears are feeding on the fish. There is a place about 8 miles from here that the bears come to eat. Merrell and Chuck went up yesterday evening to check out the ferry and stopped by and saw a mother and a cub. Of course they didn't take a camera with them, so I want to go back today and see if they are there so I can get some pictures. The best part of our trip has been all of the nature pictures we have been able to take. Alaska and Canada both do a good job of preserving land for the wildlife, while at the same time allowing us to view them in their natural habitat. Haines has a big bald eagle festival in November. According to what we read, up to 3, 500 bald eagles come here in the fall. They have an Eagle Preserve here and I think we're going to go out there today. Up to 100 eagles stay here year round and we might be lucky enough to see one or more of them.

If Merrell does well today, we will probably leave here tomorrow night. The ferry runs at 10 at night and 6 in the morning. Guess which one I think we should take??? :>) :>) It's only an hour's trip to Skagway. We will probably stay in Skagway for a day or so and do some sightseeing there before we head back into Canada.

Catch ya later,
