Day 56
September 2, 2008
Ocean Side RV Park, Haines AK

We did some sight seeing today and one of the places we went was the Bald Eagle Museum. Not only did they have Eagles there, they had all kinds of wild animal mounts. They were so realistic and they had them displayed in a natural habitat environment. They looked so real. After we left there, we went back to where Merrell and Chuck saw the bears yesterday. They were there today, but it was pretty dark out (gloomy kind of dark, not night kind of dark) and the pictures weren't the best, but I'm posting them anyway. We were so lucky. We ended up seeing about 20 eagles in the wild. They were in the same areas as the bears. Some were in trees and some were down near the water fishing. It was the first time we had ever seen eagles in the wild (other than the one we saw in Denali National Park). Unfortunately, our cameras just didn't have quite enough zoom to really be able to see them in the pictures, but I'm going to post them anyway, just to prove we did see them. It was wonderful to be able to see the bears fishing and the eagles sitting it the tops of the tall pine trees and then swooping down and going fishing.

I think we are heading out of Haines tomorrow if all goes as planned. Merrell did well all day today, so we feel OK about getting back on the road and seeing more wonderful things.

NO!!! It's not a buffalo chasing me. It's a Moose and it's stuffed, so it can't chase me!!

Merrell and I with the bear display.

One of the Eagles soaring above the water.

Black Bear and seagull sharing the fishing hole!!

Carolee and Chuck weren't afraid to get too close to this bear. It was VERY friendly!!!

Carolee and Donna surrounded by Bears. They were the kind we didn't mind being close to.

These are two bald eagles that we saw across the creek in the top of two pine trees. I know they only look like two white blobs on the trees, but they are truly Bald Eagles. We zoomed in as far as we could, but this is the best our camera would do. At times like this, I would love to have one of the cameras with all the bells and whistles. BUT!! I would have to go to school to learn how to use it. At least with this camera you can just turn it on and point and get something. Teeheehee

We had a wonderful day today. Merrell really liked the eagles (bald eagles and golden eagles) and he was so happy that he got to see so many at one time. It was truly a great experience.
Well, I'm watching election stuff and posting to the blog at the same time, so if I accidently type John McCain or Fred Thompson or Laura Bush you will know why!! :>)
