Day 33, August 10, 2008

Day 33, August 10, 2008
Valdez, Alaska
Eagles Nest Campground

We spent the day (at least Carolee and I did) today just relaxing and resting up from our long trip across Canada and the long drive in Alaska on the way to Valdez. Merrell and Chuck decided that they wanted to do some exploring, but I stayed in and watched TV and just relaxed.
They decided to go down and check out a place to do some salmon fishing. They went to a place someone had told them about. They took our cameras and took some great videos and pictures of two bear cubs "fishing" and all of the salmon and sea gulls.

Merrell decided not to fish because all he had to do was put his hands in the water and the fish literally jumped into them. LOL Chuck got a great picture of him holding one of them!!!

This is one of the bear fishing!! Wonder if the salmon jumped into his mouth like it jumped into Merrell's hands???

Merrell got a great video of the bear fishing

He and Chuck took videos of the salmon. With that many salmon, no wonder you don't really have to fish...................... The sea gulls were really loud and really fat from eating all of the dead salmon!!!!

Day 32-August 9, 2008

Drive from Tonsina Campground to Valdez, Alaska

Today was an easy day. We only had to drive around a hundred miles to get to Valdez, so we took our time and stopped whenever we saw something we wanted to see. We got to Valdez around 3 this afternoon and set up camp and now everyone is taking a nap (except me, of course). Since we have Internet access here at the campground, I thought I would try to catch up with downloading and posting pictures. It is soooooooooooooo much prettier down this way than it was in the Tok, Chicken and Delta Junction areas. The closer we got to Valdez, the prettier the scenery. We spent the last 40 miles taking pictures and making videos. We hope to take a day tour on a boat that takes you to a glacier and also to see a lot of sea life (whales, etc.). We are going to try to book one for Monday because we have to leave here on Tuesday to head to Anchorage. Time is passing entirely too fast.
We will probably just do some sightseeing around the Pipeline and the town of Valdez tomorrow.

This is the Worthington Glacier which is just a few miles from Valdez

This is another view of the Worthington Glacier

A snow capped mountain on the drive to Valdez

Stream and mountain on the drive to Valdez

Isn't this just a beautiful picture?

Merrell and Chuck climbed up the mountain and took some pictures looking down on the motorhome and the view below it

We saw several waterfalls on the way to Valdez. Here is a video of one of them.

Beautiful waterfall in the Keystone Canyon on the way to Valdez

Merrell and Chuck at the Information Center in Valdez. They had an underwater camera which was filming the spawning of the Salmon. It was too cool to see, but our camera wouldn't take pictures that were good enough to post.

Carolee and Donna at the Visitors Center in Valdez. Aren't the flowers beautiful?
